General anesthesia is administered. Depending on the amount and location of excess skin, the incision length and pattern is decided, generally placed on the inside of the arm or on the back of the arm and extends from the underarm to just above the elbow. For fat removal, your arm will be treated with liposuction then the underlying tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures. The purpose of the liposuction is to reduce the volume of Arm fat prior to excising skin. Finally, the skin is smoothed over the new contour of your arm. Your incisions will be closed. The surgery takes about three to four hours.
Post the Arm Lift surgery, the incisions will be bandaged. Your arms will be wrapped in an elastic bandage or a compression garment. A small tube may be temporarily put to drain excess blood or fluid. You will feel tightness in the upper arm and swelling due to the trauma of surgery. Most of these side- effects resolve with time. You will be given specific instructions. Patients will be allowed to go home shortly after the surgery and can resume work in a week. Postoperative pain is subjective and will vary considerably from person to person. Refrain from heavy lifting or over activity. Patients are usually up and around on the day of surgery. Remember, scars are conspicuous, at least initially. Any scar goes through a maturation process, which takes a year to complete. The scar runs posterior along the arm from the elbow to the underarm. The incision continues to heal for at least 12 months following surgery. Most patients can return to work in seven to ten days, as long as the job does not require a lot of physical activity.
A good candidate will be someone in overall good health who desires to improve the contour of their upper arms. Patients who have experienced massive weight loss and have genetically bulky Arms are good candidates for an Arm Lift.
